WORTH THE WAIT: USAC EAST COAST RETURNS IN GRAND STYLE; KENNY MILLER III PICKS UP DRAMATIC WIN
NEW EGYPT, NJ – Worth the Wait.
The USAC East Coast Sprint Cars returned to New Egypt Speedway for the first time since 2020 on Saturday night in a major way.
The 25-lap main event clicked off caution free, with an epic three-car battle in lap traffic settling the outcome.
Morgantown, Pa.’s Kenny Miller III led only the final three laps of the main event, but they were the only three he needed to pick up the win.
“It took me awhile to figure out how to run this place,” Miller III stated. “I’ve never been here before so I wasn’t sure how to get around.”
Old Bridge, N.J.’s Chris Allen Jr. led the opening 22 laps, holding off challenges from Miller III early, and Collegeville, Pa.’s Alex Bright through the middle stretch of the race.
Bright pulled off before completing lap 14 with mechanical issues, opening the door for another wingless sprint car star to enter the fray.
Allentown, Pa.’s Briggs Danner took his turn to join the battle at the front of the field between Miller and Allen.
The lead trio caught lap traffic battling side-by-side on lap 19, putting the three cars right together all searching for a way by the pair of lap cars.
Allen eventually slipped by the pair, but Miller stayed with him. Two laps later, Miller picked up a massive run off the second corner and sent it in underneath Allen for a slide job that stuck.
“I found a line in one and two that gave me a big run down the backstretch,” Miller stated of the race winning move. “He kind of washed up off turn two and I was able to get to him.”
Allen tried to get back to Miller but was unable to take the lead back or break Miller’s momentum.
Instead, Allen settled for the runner-up spot with Danner, Milford, N.J.’s Bobby Butler, and Goshen, N.Y.’s Joe Kata completing the top five.
The USAC East Coast Sprint Cars return to New Egypt Speedway on Friday, October 10 when the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Cars roll into town.
In Swagger Factory Apparel Crate Sportsman competition, defending champion Ryan Simmons broke through for his first win of the season.
The Cream Ridge, N.J. native fired from eighth and raced his way up to fourth, before a tangle with Dan Fleming caused an 11-car pile-up, with most driving away from the incident.
Simmons would restart outside the top 10 but still managed to make his way to the front.
Bedminster, N.J.’s Mike Butler was in the lead with Southampton, N.J.’s David Miloszar in the runner-up spot when Simmons got to third.
Butler, however, began to lose air in the right rear tire, slowing he and Miloszar’s pace. Simmons seized the opportunity, racing to the outside of both to take the lead and ultimately the win.
Butler held on for second, with Miloszar, Ethan Bill, and Steve Davis completing the top five.
Howell, N.J.’s Darren Cox claimed his first career Xtreme Diesel Performance (XDP) LLC., Street Stock victory.
Cox led all 15 laps of the main event to pick up the win, which he dedicated to his late friend, Bill Liedtka.
Rob Ormsbee, Patrick Force, Scott Freed, and Chris Allen Sr. completed the top five.
Kyle Hurley joined Ryan Simmons as defending champions to break through on Saturday night, getting his first Four Cylinder win of the season.
The New Egypt, N.J. native held off challenges from Justin Dunn and Bob Drayton III to pick up the win.
Drayton, Joe Garey Sr., Bobby Drayton IV, and Dale Mull completed the top five.
Racing continues next Saturday, August 16 for Katy’s Race, the third annual event honoring Katy Mancini. The Modifieds will race for a minimum $4,500 top prize. The Swagger Factory Apparel Crate Sportsman take part in the Mr. Crate Classic, paying a minimum of $1,500-to-win and they will also take part in the Oliver Communications Group Match Races.
